The AI Marketing Engineer Role in 2026: Skills and Pay

The short answer
- An AI marketing engineer turns a marketing team's manual work into agents, automations and integrations, and is judged on agents live, hours saved and revenue driven.
- In a September 2026 review of 60 live marketing job posts that mention AI, 45 required designing or shipping AI agents and automated workflows, and 26 named Claude.
- Live postings on October 8, 2026 show $127K–$296K at Figma and $135K–$200K at Profound for marketing engineer roles.
What is an AI marketing engineer?
An AI marketing engineer is a marketer who builds. Instead of briefing engineers or buying another tool, they find the manual work that slows a marketing team down and replace it with agents, automations and integrations that the team can run. The title is new, but the work joins three older roles: marketing operations, growth engineering and creative production.
Figma's posting for a Marketing Engineer, AI Deployment, describes it well: building custom tools, agents, automations and integrations, including APIs and MCP servers, for marketing teams.
What do job postings ask for?
A MarTech review published on September 28, 2026 looked at 60 live marketing job descriptions that mention AI, taken from employers' own careers pages. In 45 of the 60, designing or shipping AI agents and automated workflows was a listed requirement. Claude appeared in 26 of the postings and OpenAI or ChatGPT in 19.
Individual postings get specific. Profound's Marketing Engineer, Demand Generation, role asks for hands-on experience shipping AI agents and LLM-powered tooling that sales and marketing teams actually use, and says candidates work in Claude Code, Cursor or an equivalent every day. It also asks for SQL and Python to build automations without leaning on engineering.
- Building agents and automated workflows (n8n, Gumloop, Zapier, custom code).
- APIs, webhooks and MCP servers that connect AI to the CRM, ads and analytics.
- Evals: golden sets and review gates so agents can be trusted.
- SQL and Python for data and automation.
- Experimentation and measurement tied to revenue.
How is the role measured?
The clearest postings measure outcomes, not activity. Figma lists three: agents live (AI systems deployed into active use by marketers), hours saved (manual work handed back for higher-value tasks), and revenue driven (pipeline, conversion lift or deal velocity).
That is a useful way to describe your own work too. My current role at Imagera AI is a good example of the shape: eight marketing agents in production with golden-set evals and a human review gate, drafting time cut from 45 to 8 minutes, and first-pass approval up from 55% to 88%.
What does it pay?
Pay transparency laws mean many US postings list a range. Figma's Marketing Engineer, AI Deployment, posting lists $127,000–$296,000. Profound's Marketing Engineer posting, checked on October 8, 2026, lists $135K–$200K with equity.
The wider market supports a premium. PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, released on June 15, 2026 after analysing more than a billion job ads in 27 countries and territories, found an average 62% wage premium for AI skills, up from 57% a year earlier, and that jobs requiring AI skills grew 69% against 9% for the overall market.

What does a typical week look like?
Most of the week goes on finding and removing manual work. A typical week might include interviewing a team about the task they repeat most, building or improving an agent to draft that work, writing evaluation cases so the agent can be trusted, and wiring the result into the tools the team already uses, such as the CRM, the ad platforms or Slack.
The rest goes on proof. Each system needs a number: hours saved, a quality score from the evaluation set, or a revenue effect from a test. That number is what earns the next project and the budget for it. Without it, the work looks like tinkering.
It also involves saying no. Not every task should be automated. Work that depends on taste, relationships or judgement usually stays human, with AI helping at the edges. Knowing the difference is part of the job.
Which skills should you build first?
Start with the skills that appear most often in postings and compound fastest. Learn to work in an AI coding tool such as Claude Code or Cursor, because it lets you build automations without waiting for engineering. Learn enough SQL and Python to move and check data. Learn one workflow tool well, such as n8n. Then learn evaluation: how to build a small golden set of examples and score an agent's output against it.
Measurement comes next: A/B tests, holdouts and tying spend to revenue. These are the skills that turn an automation into a business case.
- An AI coding tool (Claude Code or Cursor).
- SQL and Python basics.
- One workflow tool, such as n8n.
- Evals: golden sets and review gates.
- Experiments and revenue measurement.
How do you move into the role?
Show what you have built. Profound's posting says it plainly: 'We weigh what you've built more heavily than time in seat.' A portfolio of two or three working systems, each with a before-and-after number, says more than a list of tools.
Pick systems that match the postings you want: an agent with evals, an outbound or lead-response workflow, and a measurement project that ties spend to revenue. Write each one up as the problem, the system, the numbers and what you would change. Then apply with that proof in hand.
Keep each write-up short: one paragraph on the problem, a diagram or list of the steps in the system, the before-and-after numbers, and what you would improve next. Link to a short video walkthrough if you can. Hiring managers screening many portfolios want to see quickly that the system exists, that it works and that you understand its limits. The same write-ups double as material for interviews, where case-study and build exercises are increasingly common.
Questions
What does an AI marketing engineer do?
They turn a marketing team's manual work into agents, automations and integrations, such as drafting agents with review gates, lead-response workflows and APIs or MCP servers that connect AI to the CRM and ad platforms. They are judged on agents live, hours saved and revenue driven.
How much does an AI marketing engineer earn?
Posted US base ranges checked on October 8, 2026 include $127,000–$296,000 at Figma and $135K–$200K plus equity at Profound. Ranges vary with seniority, location and company stage. The PwC 2026 AI Jobs Barometer also found an average 62% wage premium for AI skills across job ads, which supports pay at the higher end for people who can show working systems.
Do AI marketing engineers need to code?
Most postings ask for some SQL and Python and for building with APIs and AI coding tools such as Claude Code or Cursor. You do not need to be a software engineer, but you need to ship working automations without waiting for one.
How is a marketing engineer different from a GTM engineer?
They overlap. GTM engineers usually focus on pipeline: enrichment, lead routing and outbound. Marketing engineers cover the wider marketing team, including content, creative and measurement. Both build automations and are measured on revenue. In practice many teams hire one person to do both, and the skills transfer either way.
