Claude Code for Marketers: What Teams Actually Build

The short answer
- Marketers use Claude Code to turn repetitive production work, such as ad variants, briefs and reports, into small workflows they can run in seconds.
- Anthropic's own growth team cut ad creation from 30 minutes to 30 seconds per ad with Claude Code, without writing code by hand.
- The setup that holds up has three parts: skills for brand rules, connections to live data, and a person who approves before anything is published or spent.
What is Claude Code, from a marketer's point of view?
Claude Code is an AI agent that works inside a project folder. You describe the task in plain language, and it reads files, writes scripts, calls tools and shows you what it changed. For a marketer the folder is the campaign: the ad export, the brand guide, the product facts, the reporting sheet.
That is the difference from a chat window. A chat answers once and forgets. Claude Code can keep a brand-voice file, a list of character limits and a log of past tests next to the work, and use all of them every time. The result is a small, reusable workflow instead of a one-off answer.
What have marketing teams published about using it?
Anthropic has written about its own growth marketing team in two places. In July 2025 it described an agentic workflow that processes CSV files with hundreds of ads, finds the underperformers and writes new variations inside strict character limits, plus a Figma plugin that generates up to 100 ad variations by swapping headlines and descriptions.
In January 2026 it followed up with the story of Austin Lau, a growth marketer who had never opened a terminal: ad creation went from 30 minutes per ad to 30 seconds. He built custom Skills for brand tone and voice, product accuracy and Google Ads responsive search ad rules, and the article is explicit that the copy examples were written with the product marketing and copywriting teams, and that he still refines output by going back and forth with Claude.
Which marketing jobs suit Claude Code best?
The best first jobs are high-volume, rule-bound and easy to check. If a person could write the rules on one page and a reviewer could approve the result in a minute, Claude Code can usually do the production in between.
Notice what the list has in common: the work is already done by people today, the rules already exist in someone's head or a document, and the result is easy to check. Claude Code does not invent the process; it runs the one you have, faster and the same way every time.
- Ad variants inside character limits, from a CSV of current ads and their results
- Briefs and first drafts that follow a brand-voice skill
- Weekly reports that pull from ads, analytics and SEO tools into one summary
- UTM-tagged link sets and naming that follows one convention
- Batch creative: prompts written from rules, generated, then reviewed on a contact sheet
How should the project be set up?
Put three things in the folder before you ask for any output. First, skills: short files for brand voice, product facts and channel rules, so every request starts from the same standard. Second, data access: exports or MCP connections to the systems you report on, such as the ad platforms, analytics and the CRM. Third, a log: a running file of hypotheses and results, so the next test starts from what already won.
Keep it in Git. When a skill changes, you can see what changed and roll back. That is also where a golden set of approved examples belongs, so you can test a new prompt against real work before it touches a campaign.
What does a first workflow look like, step by step?
Take ad variants as the example. Export the current ads with their results to a CSV. Write a short brand-voice skill and a channel-rules skill with the character limits. Ask Claude Code to find the underperformers, explain why in one line each, and draft replacements inside the limits. Review the drafts on one screen, approve the ones you would run, and log what you changed and why.
Repeat the same run next week from the same folder. Because the skills, the data and the log are all there, the second run starts from what you learned in the first. That compounding is the real gain: each week the drafts need fewer edits, and the log becomes a record of what wins for your audience.
- Export the data the task needs
- Write the rules as skills
- Ask for the draft and the reasoning
- Review and approve in one place
- Log the result and reuse it next time
What does it look like in a real team?
At Imagera AI, Shalini Verma runs eight marketing agents built in Claude Code with Agent Skills and MCP connections to Meta Ads, GA4 and Ahrefs. Every output passes a golden-set eval and a human review gate. Drafting time fell from 45 to 8 minutes, first-pass approval rose from 55% to 88%, and creative output grew four times.
The same pattern shows up in hiring: a MarTech review of 60 live marketing job descriptions that mention AI found Claude named in 26 of them, and 45 listing agents or automated workflows as a requirement.
Where are the limits?
Claude Code drafts and assembles; it does not own the decision. Anything that spends money, publishes in the brand's name or makes a product claim should stop for a person to approve. Skills without live data tend to invent numbers, so reports should read from the source, not from memory.
Start with one workflow, measure the time per asset before and after, and only then add the next one. The teams that get the most from it treat it as a production system with an owner, not as a clever chat.
Cost is the other limit to watch. Large, all-purpose agents with many connections use more tokens per turn. Small skills for narrow tasks, and only the data connections a workflow needs, keep runs fast and the bill predictable.
Questions
Do marketers need to code to use Claude Code?
No. Anthropic's growth marketer Austin Lau had never opened a terminal before building ad workflows and a Figma plugin with it. You describe the task in plain language and review what it builds. Knowing how to read a CSV and how your ad platforms work matters more than writing code.
What is the difference between Claude Code and a Claude chat?
A chat answers one question at a time. Claude Code works inside a project folder, so it can keep brand rules, product facts, data exports and a test log next to the task, write and run small scripts, and repeat the same workflow every time. That makes it suited to production work, not just ideas.
What are Agent Skills in Claude Code?
Skills are short instruction files the agent loads when a task needs them, such as brand voice, product accuracy or channel rules. They make every request start from the same standard, so output stays consistent across people and weeks. Keep them in version control so changes can be reviewed and rolled back.
Is it safe to let Claude Code run ad campaigns?
Let it draft, analyse and prepare changes; keep a person approving anything that spends money or publishes. Read access to ad and analytics data is low risk. Write access should go through a confirm step, and every change should be logged so it can be reversed.
