Portfolio SEO for marketers: get found by search and AI

The short answer

  • Make yourself one clear entity: the same name, title and profile links everywhere, tied together with ProfilePage and Person markup.
  • Give every project its own crawlable page with the problem, the system and the numbers, written so the answer comes first.
  • Make the content readable without JavaScript, and earn mentions on other sites; that is what AI answers draw on.

Why does a marketer’s portfolio need SEO at all?

Because the people deciding whether to talk to you search first. A recruiter or founder types your name, or asks an assistant who has done a particular kind of work, before they open your résumé. If the first results are a stale profile and nothing about your results, the decision is half made.

A portfolio is also a working sample. If you sell yourself on search, AI visibility or growth systems, the site is the first proof that you can do it for yourself.

It also compounds. A résumé is read once, in the moment someone opens it. A portfolio page keeps answering searches for your name, your projects and the problems you solve long after you publish it, and each new project or post adds another way in.

How do you make yourself one clear entity?

Search engines and AI systems build a picture of a person from many sources. Help them by being consistent: the same name, the same job title and the same location on your site, LinkedIn and any other profile, with links between them.

On the site, mark the main page up as a ProfilePage whose mainEntity is a Person, and add sameAs links to your other profiles. Google supports ProfilePage structured data and lists sameAs among its recommended properties. Add jobTitle and a short knowsAbout list that matches what the site actually covers.

Pick one primary URL for yourself, usually your own domain, and point every profile at it. When a recruiter, a search engine or an assistant follows the links in any direction, they should arrive at the same person with the same story.

What should each case-study page contain?

One project per page, each with its own URL, title and description. Lead with the result in one line, then the problem, what you built and the numbers. Recruiters skim, and answer engines quote short passages, so the first two sentences of each section should stand on their own.

  • A title that names the outcome, not just the client.
  • The before and after numbers, stated plainly.
  • The stack and your role, so searches for a tool or skill find you.
  • Dates and the company, consistent with your résumé.
  • Links to related projects and to your contact page.

What are the technical basics for a portfolio site?

Make sure the words are in the HTML. Many portfolio templates render everything with JavaScript, and the crawlers behind ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity do not run it, so a beautiful animated site can be blank to them. Prerender pages at build time, keep animation as an enhancement, and test with JavaScript turned off.

BasicWhy
Prerendered HTMLAI crawlers read raw HTML only
Unique title and description per pageEach project can rank for its own query
ProfilePage + Person + Article markupTies pages, person and profiles together
XML sitemap and clean URLsEvery project page gets discovered
Fast pages with sized mediaPeople and crawlers both leave slow pages

Which pages should a marketing portfolio have?

A clear home page that says who you are, what you do and what results you have produced. A page per project. A résumé page with the full record and a downloadable PDF. A writing section if you publish, with each post linking back to the projects it draws on. A contact page that makes it easy to start a conversation. Free tools are worth adding if they relate to your work, because people link to useful tools and search for them by name.

Link the pages to each other deliberately. Each project should link to related writing and the next project; each post should link to the project that proves its point. Internal links help crawlers find everything and help readers keep going.

How do you know the portfolio is working?

Check three things monthly. In Search Console, see which queries bring people to your name, your project pages and your posts. In analytics, see which pages lead to the contact page or résumé download. And in AI assistants, ask the questions a recruiter might ask about your field and see whether your name or pages appear.

Expect the name searches to come first and topic searches later. A portfolio that ranks for your name and shows strong results already does its main job; the writing and tools build the topic visibility over months.

How do you get mentioned beyond your own site?

Your own site is one source; AI answers lean on many. The 2026 evidence summarised by Geoptimizer found that earned media made up most links cited by AI engines and that brand mentions predicted AI visibility far better than backlinks. For a person that means talks, podcast appearances, guest posts, community answers and project write-ups on partner sites, each linking back to the case page it describes.

Write about what you have actually done. On this site every project page states only figures from my résumé, such as AI-answer citation share ~8% → ~19% or 14 meetings in 6 weeks from 200 target accounts, so anything an assistant quotes about me is true.

Questions

Should a portfolio use Person or ProfilePage schema?

Both: ProfilePage on the main about or portfolio page, with a Person as its mainEntity. Add sameAs links to LinkedIn and other profiles, and use the same Person as the author in Article markup on posts and case studies.

Do animated portfolio sites hurt SEO?

Animation itself does not, but rendering the content only with JavaScript does for AI crawlers, which read raw HTML. Prerender the pages so the text is in the HTML and keep animation as an enhancement on top.

How many case studies should a marketing portfolio have?

Enough to cover the work you want to be hired for, each on its own page. Quality beats count: a handful of projects with clear before-and-after numbers does more than a long gallery without results.
