Hook checker
A quick checklist for headlines and hooks. Paste a line and see which of five well-studied patterns it uses, why each one works, and how long it reads; then test the best version against a control.
2 of 5 patterns present · 79 characters
- ○ Loss framingPeople weigh a loss about twice as heavily as an equal gain (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979). Name what waiting costs.
- ✓ Curiosity gapA small, specific gap creates the urge to close it (Loewenstein, 1994). Open one question; answer it right away.
- ○ Specific numberA concrete figure is easier to believe and remember than an adjective. Use the real number, never a rounded boast.
- ○ Social proofPeople follow what people like them do (Goldstein, Cialdini & Griskevicius, 2008). Name the peer group.
- ✓ Speaks to the readerA line about the reader’s situation beats a line about the product.
Long for a headline (14 words). Most ad and email headlines are scanned, not read. This is a checklist that looks for words and shapes, not a prediction of performance; test the line against a control before you trust it.
How to use it
- Paste a headline, email subject line or ad hook.
- See which patterns are present and read the reason behind each.
- Rewrite, check again, and test the strongest version against a control.
Questions
What makes a good marketing hook?
A hook earns attention by speaking to the reader’s situation and giving them a reason to keep reading: a cost they want to avoid, a specific promise, a question they want answered, or proof that people like them already act.
Can this tool predict click-through rate?
No. It looks for words and shapes linked to persuasion patterns; it cannot know your audience, offer or channel. Use it to improve drafts, then let an A/B test against a control decide.
Why does loss framing work?
Kahneman and Tversky’s prospect theory (1979) found that losses weigh more heavily than equal gains, which is why framing the cost of inaction often moves people more than describing the upside.
How long should a headline be?
Short enough to scan at a glance; many email and ad headlines work best at roughly six to twelve words. Clarity beats length either way.
