Questions
What are UTM parameters?
Tags added to the end of a URL (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and optionally utm_term and utm_content) that tell analytics tools such as GA4 where a visit came from.
Which UTM parameters are required?
Source, medium and campaign should always be set; they map to the source, medium and campaign dimensions in GA4. Term and content are optional and useful for keywords and for telling ad variants apart.
Are UTM values case-sensitive?
Yes. GA4 treats “LinkedIn” and “linkedin” as two different sources, which splits your reports. Lower-casing every value, as this builder does by default, keeps them together.
Should I use UTMs on internal links?
No. UTM tags on links between pages of your own site start a new session and overwrite the original source, so keep them for links that bring people in from outside.
